Superwoman After 40: A Bitter Witch with a Big Butt Genie James, M.M.Sc.
I first met Phoebe Hunt, a 44 year old self-employed audiologist and mother of fifteen year old twin girls, in the waiting room of my dentist’s office. Phoebe was – is – one of those women you notice: thick, honey blond hair worn slightly below her shoulders (who cared if it was natural or not…it was gorgeous), startling greenish blue eyes and naturally prominent high cheek bones (not of the Juviderm or Radiesse variety). We struck up a conversation and Phoebe was most intrigued when I mentioned our medical practice and our focus on the benefits of hormone balance for life.
“Thank heavens I am not yet going through ‘The Change’,” she told me, “but it is good to know that your husband’s medical practice will be there when I get to that point. Right now I am having a hard enough time getting through my 40’s. What I need today is an energy boost because I never sleep, a diet plan that will vanish my ever-expanding hips and some pill that will keep me from constantly snapping my girls’ heads off. Oh, and a chauffeur until they get their drivers’ license would be nice, too,” she chuckled but with more sourness than mirth.
Poor woman, I thought. She has no clue why, after 40, many former superwomen turn into bitter witches with big butts. It’s almost an epidemic in this country. Unfortunately, millions of women like Phoebe are unknowing victims of their hormones…or lack of.
I started to explain some of medical science to Phoebe but just then the hygienist called me back. I quickly handed her a business card and suggested she go on our website and check out our free Hormone Imbalance Quiz. “Call me if you have any questions or want to chat,” I offered.
Six weeks later my cell phone rang. It was Phoebe.
“Genie, I went on your website, took your free Hormone Imbalance Quiz then ordered all three of your books: From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well, From Belly Fat to Belly Flat and In the Mood Again. I’ve read them cover to cover. Who knew that my declining progesterone levels could have something to do with my increasingly broad backside and short temper? And, even more significant, I never knew that adequate progesterone levels are essential for long-term breast, bone and brain health and function. And I am so relieved to know that all these things are just not in my head. I had my husband read the part about how long-term life stress can cannibalize youthful hormone levels setting you up to be fat, angry and tired.” She paused.
“I know I need help. What would you suggest I do now?"
1) Try an over-the-counter bioidentical progesterone cream. Prior to the onset of menopause, eighty to ninety percent of women find that an over-the-counter formulation of bioidentical progesterone, such as Dr. Randolph’s Natural Balance Cream, is all they need to self-manage a progesterone deficiency and eliminate their underlying condition of estrogen dominance to feel, look and act like themselves again.
2) Have Your Hormone Levels Tested and Stop Your Guessing Game. Test your hormone levels to find out exactly how production of your hormones has shifted, which specific hormones are deficient or in excess, and the type of hormone imbalance indicated. The Natural Hormone Institute has simplified the testing process by providing laboratory hormone kits you can order online. Just select one of the three available hormone test kits based on your symptoms of hormone imbalance.
